What is Corneal Transplantation?

The cornea is the transparent tissue in the front of the eye. We have lost transparency due to various reasons such as trauma, infection, hereditary and congenital diseases. Corneal transplantation of corneal tissue from a depressed person is called corneal transplantation (keratoplasty). Corneal transplantation is the most common and most successful organ transplantation worldwide.


What is Eye Banking?

It is called the eye bank where the corneal part of the corneal part taken from a living human eye is examined and evaluated for the transplantation and the corneal tissues where the corneal tissues are stored under the appropriate conditions until the patient is transferred. Eye banks are the oldest transplantation organization in the world.

In 1957, the first eye bank in Turkey by Vehbi Koç, was established in Ankara University Hospital.

The unity of the common standards and procedures, the exchange of information between the eye banks, the li Eye Banks and Corneal Transplantation Centers Directive sağlamak was published in the official gazette in 2001 and was put into effect at the beginning of 2005.

Turkish Penal Code; The cornea receiving authority from the cadaver was granted only to eye banks. It was considered a crime to purchase, store and distribute corneas for the institutions and persons other than the eye banks and employees.


How to Register for Corneal Transplantation

Patients who are examined by the Ophthalmologist and who are considered to have corneal transplantation are admitted by their physicians to the eye bank with patient identification and clinical information and a patient record is created from the registry of the Ministry.

By the eye bank medical manager, the records and donor information are compared to match the registration order.

The patient is informed by his / her physician.

Bank technician's duties and responsibilities

-The supervisor of the laboratory is responsible for receiving the tissue from the transmitter.

Our hospital is in the first floor of Eye Bank Eye Clinic.

Our Bank; patient room, archive and director room, corneal laboratory consists of 3 rooms.

There are 39 integrated hospitals in our eye bank, of which 21 are State Hospital, 2 are University Hospital and 21 are Private Hospital.

In Eye Bank, 1 Medical Manager, 1 Eye Bank Laboratory Supervisor, 2 technicians, 4 people are working.
